It’s International Stress Awareness Week

Work is the most common cause of stress for UK adults, and this week is International Stress Awareness Week. At emotive, the continued wellbeing of every member of our team is important to us, so the team took some time to relax with individual massage sessions provided by Massage Angels!  

Mental Health Foundation Survey showed that 74% of UK adults experienced stress last year that had made them feel overwhelmed or unable to cope. It also found that 32% of adults had experienced suicidal feelings and 16% had self-harmed as a result of stress. We strongly believe in the importance of work-life balance and, this year, have placed more focus than ever before on the health and wellness of our team. We have our own, trained, Mental Health First Aider in the team and we hope that by maintaining open communication and a friendly culture, we can ensure that no team member is left to cope with their stress by themselves. 

We’ve also been getting our team’s views on what they do to deal with stress, using tips from the NHS list of 10 Stress Busters.

Senior Account Executive, Kate finds that being active is a great way to beat stress. The image shows her rowing at Henley Women’s Regatta this year. Here’s what she had to say: 

“As well as enjoying the physical benefits and competitiveness of rowing I also use it as a good form of stress relief. For me, physical exercise provides me with the opportunity to unwind from a stressful day and focus solely on training. Additionally, cycling into work ensures I’m alert and awake by the time I get into the office and means I’m in a better mood than if I’d been crammed onto a stuffy tube carriage for an hour.”

Aaron, Senior Medical Copywriter and an organiser for the emotive Social Club, picked out ‘connecting with people’ from the list. Here’s what he had to say:

“With the emotive Social Club, we’re always thinking of ways to encourage the team to take time out to relax and unwind – and feel rewarded for all their hard work. We’ve hosted lots of events to help achieve this, from our annual Summer Street Party, Bake-off and Halloween Pumpkin Carving Competition, to our charity events such as the NSPCC Colour Run. We also make sure to celebrate local, UK and Global events, such as Pride, and use our comfy Sofa area to show major sporting events like Wimbledon or the FIFA World Cup. Having a mix of big team activities and smaller gestures goes a long way to making the office a relaxed, fun space for everyone!”

Naomi, Junior Account Executive, finds that taking on a new challenge is a great way to feel good and take her mind off stressful times! Here’s what she had to say:

“The reason why I chose to take up the challenge of a 10-mile Tough Mudder was to take my mind off other things! It was a positive form of escapism and made me feel good about myself. The event was very high energy and filled with adrenaline and after I finished the race, it was a really uplifting moment. Even though it was over quickly, I’ll always be really proud of that weekend; it helped me manage negative thoughts associated with stress and encouraged me to have confidence in myself.”

Anj, Client Services Director, finds that staying positive is the best way to feel good and take her mind off stressful times! Here’s what she had to say:

“I think keeping an optimistic frame of mind is key to reducing stress in the office. We have a system where team members can fill out postcards with a personal message to recognise each other’s hard work and going the extra mile for a client. It’s a great way of maintaining the momentum on projects and the supportive team environment we aim for.”
