Every year we feel proud to support Porphyria Awareness Week, and this year is no different – even whilst we’re all working remotely.
Over the past week, we wanted to spread the word about Porphyria to everyone we know and work with. In line with this year’s theme of #AskMeAboutPorphyria and with the recent popularity of virtual pub quizzes, we held our own quiz on Wednesday evening covering topics about the disease area and its link with the colour purple. It was a close competition but, in the end, there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Account Manager, Kate Wagstaff, who will receive a goodie bag via post in the coming days.
Porphyria is a rare condition that is thought to affect around 1 in 75,000 people. Porphyria symptoms vary greatly, in type and severity, and can be caused by certain triggers, such as smoking and alcohol use. This often leaves doctors mystified and can lead to a lengthy diagnosis process, while patients suffer. To emphasise the importance of raising awareness, our Medical and, Creative teams collaborated to produce an infographic to help better explain the disease.
Finally, throughout the week, we went Purple for Porphyria. The word porphyria is derived from the Greek “porphyra”, which translates to purple in English. We were glad to see the American Porphyria Foundation hold “Wear Purple Day!” today, so we decided to arrange a virtual photo of some of our team representing the colour. Not everyone had purple attire, leading to some members having to get creative from home. See our animation here!
