emotive adds London school to Science Bursary Scheme

emotive is pleased to be adding a second school to the existing programme of supporting science in secondary schools. We are so excited to be welcoming Stoke Newington School in Hackney, London to the scheme, with a pledge of financial support for the science department over three years, as well as a prize for an outstanding science pupil.

Stoke Newington School is a large, vibrant co-ed secondary school in North-East London with a focus on media arts, science and mathematics and inclusion. The school will receive a bursary over three years from 2020 to invest in one of their nine science laboratories, which will become the ‘emotive lab’.

emotive is also providing a prize to an outstanding pupil studying science in their final year of A levels. The winner will be chosen through a science writing competition and final interview, and the winning pupil will receive a laptop or iPad and book tokens for university texts.  This individual will also be offered a period of work experience at emotive after completing their A levels and will be invited to take up an internship in the summer after their first year at university.

Head of Science Jesse Hershkowitz said – “We are delighted to enter into a partnership with emotive, allowing selected pupils the opportunity to gain significant work experience at the company. The Prize for Scientific Engagement and resulting publicity in the school will hopefully encourage even more pupils at Stoke Newington School to excel in the subject and choose Science subjects at A level. It will also hopefully raise pupil understanding in the field of healthcare communications, one which they might otherwise not know much about. We are looking forward to naming one of our Science labs “the emotive lab” and will be spending the money we will be receiving on a new set of iPads for the Science department.”

Stoke Newington School is the second school to be added to emotive’s science bursary scheme. We have been supporting Beaconsfield High School for girls since 2017 with an annual bursary for the ‘emotive lab’ and prizes for pupils in their final year. We have seen three winners of the prize come into the emotive offices for work experience and internships. This year the science results at the school reflected the efforts put in to improve achievements in science with 70% of students achieving A*, As and Bs across the three science disciplines and 62 students leaving to study Science related degrees at universities.

Rachel Smith, Headteacher said,“The generosity and forward thinking of emotive has helped us achieve our vision of offering Beaconsfield High students exciting and collaborative laboratories to learn and develop their scientific skills in.  Such fantastic facilities raise our students’ ambitions whilst also promoting group work for the very best thinking. The additional funding has helped us to purchase more equipment and offer practical work that would otherwise not have been possible.”

The emotive Prize for Scientific Engagement has, over three years, supported three ambitious and dedicated young people into university, ensuring they have the best IT equipment and access to all of the texts that they need in order to continue their remarkable journey towards an exciting science-based STEM career.

emotive is also providing support for careers talks at the schools to spread the word about medical communications as an option after a Science degree and we are encouraging our team members to return to their universities and speak to current students about career options. We are committed as an agency to helping young people studying science to understand fully the array of careers open to them and to provide them with information and, where possible, practical opportunities.
