A day in the life of an emotive Medical Copywriter

Talia Coren joined emotive as an Associate Medical Writer after graduating from Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry with a Master’s in Forensic Medical Sciences. She also holds a BSc in Human Biology with a focus on Medical Biology from the University of Birmingham. She has been a central part of the emotive family for just over a year now, recently progressing to Medical Copywriter.

What are you responsible for?

I am primarily responsible for writing scientifically accurate yet engaging content. I am equally as creative as I am scientific, so I work very closely with the creative team within the agency to brainstorm and develop innovative ideas. Working shoulder to shoulder like this means that a big part of my job is to ensure that everything from a medical point of view meets creative standards and requirements.

Talk me through your typical day.

Well, there isn’t really a ‘typical’ day at emotive! Agency life means there is a lot of variety; every day is different. I commute every morning from my house in Essex and use the Central Line. Each day certainly brings a new adventure. When I get into the office, I always start by checking my emails, followed by writing a to-do list for the rest of the day. I then do the rounds and speak to whoever I need to in order to get going. After I’ve been briefed, I kick start my work and settle in. I always make sure to take advantage of my lunch break and venture out to stretch my legs. The agency is in central Soho so there are plenty of things to see and shops to mooch around.

Describe a favourite project you’ve worked on.

Recently, I have been working on an exciting creative campaign. At emotive, we love to think outside the box and this project allowed us to dig deep. I wrote all the copy that appears in the campaign itself, as well as a list of headlines and straplines that can be used throughout all materials. The creative team came up with some incredible artwork and when combined with my copy, it really was something to be proud of. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the photoshoot, so it was great to see our ideas come to life. I enjoy being able to collaborate with the creative team on all my projects as I am constantly learning. We bounce ideas off each other and are rewarded by producing some incredible materials.

What do you love most about your job at emotive?

The people! We are such a close-knit team, and everyone gets on so well. At emotive, you get to work with everyone at some point or another, so you really get to know each person. I also love the fact that there is no typical day. I get to work on such a broad range of materials across multiple therapy areas, so I am continuously learning new things.

What three words would you use to describe your job?

Dynamic, rewarding and collaborative.

Who has been the most influential person in your life to date?

Both of my parents have been influential to me but especially my mum. She raised three children and gave us everything we could ever want – she never had time for herself but would have all the time in the world for us. As the most supportive person I know – I look up to her the most.

What has been the most fun you’ve  had during your time  at emotive?

Our annual team conference event at emotive. Every year, the agency takes two days out over the summer to get the whole team together for skills development workshops, team building activities and fun. Last year, the event took place not too long after I joined so it was great to spend time with everyone out of the office. Events like this allow everyone to come out of their shell which meant that I got to know people really well right from the start.

What is your  favourite  sandwich?

That’s a hard one, probably chicken and avocado with lots of pepper. Or, smoked salmon, spinach and cucumber, with lots of pepper. (I think it is quite clear that I love pepper!)
