A day in the life of an emotive Traffic and Production Manager

Sarah Connolly studied Fine Art and worked in broadcasting before switching focus to the design and print industry 16 years ago. She spent a decade living in New Zealand and has been living in London for 11 years now. She started working at emotive earlier this year and spoke to us about how she is finding her role so far.

What are you responsible for?

I make sure work flows efficiently to the creative and writing teams. So I’m responsible for keeping everyone on track and projects on deadline; I wrangle!

Talk me through your typical day.

It’s a cliché but no two days are the same! First, I will check our internal message board and my emails. I need to make sure that everyone has what they need; for example, briefs need to be in on time. If someone had a full day’s work scheduled and were briefed late, they wouldn’t have the time to complete the work, which has a knock-on effect. So I prevent that happening. I check in with people, join project catch ups, make sure timelines are on track and check if any new work is coming in. There may be a surprise or two, like freeing people up for a pitch or a project being put on hold; I enjoy the surprises though, they make things interesting!

Describe a favourite project you’ve worked on.

I’ve enjoyed a recent branding project that has required me scheduling lots of creative and production work including a photo shoot. What I like about this agency is that there are a lot of project team catch ups, so, for example, during this kind of project, I get to see how the creative concept has been refined and I think that’s fascinating.

What do you love most about your job at emotive?

Being part of a team that tangibly makes a difference to people’s lives is huge. Also, I appreciate how supportive and communicative we are as an agency. It can be quite hard to get that right but it really works here.

Who has been the most influential person in your life to date?

My husband Matt. He’s chosen a difficult creative path and works so hard.

What three words would you use to describe your job?

Methodical and flexible simultaneously.

What has been the most fun you’ve had during your time at emotive?

It’s little things for me, not feeling I have to curb the stranger things that I find funny, having music on, it’s just a great environment.

What is your favourite sandwich?

Crisps. Chuck some New Zealand Marmite on there too. That’s terrible isn’t it? I’m standing by it, crisp sandwiches are amazing.
