A Day in the Life of a Technology Director

After graduating from UEL with a degree in Graphic Fine Arts and Digital Media, Trevor started his career as digital animator, but rapidly developed an interest in creative technology and application development. Over the last 20 years he has worked in a range of roles and agencies, joining emotive in 2015 as Head of Development. Four years later, he is an integral part of our team, more recently moving over to the role of Technology Director.

What are you responsible for?

From a project perspective, I help emotive take a digital project from its initial concept through to final delivery. I collaborate closely with the creative teams and client stakeholders to help translate their vision into its digital form and facilitate the production process.

My roles and responsibilities are varied but usually include development strategy and specification, production oversight through to quality assurance and, finally, coordinating the project launch.

Talk me through your typical day?

I’m not sure there is a typical day, but every day starts with coffee (thank you Puccino’s), then a journey into London from distant Surrey. Once in the studio, I check in with colleagues, attend project status meetings (or possibly kick off meetings for new projects), catch up with my emails and have more coffee between each and every activity.

Describe a favourite project you’ve worked on.

I love the projects that break new ground. I think some of the most interesting have been our interactive VR case studies, one was even filmed on location within a live operating theatre.

Producing content that requires careful coordination between film makers, developers and designers leads to an interesting, agile and collaborative process. The end results always have high impact.

What do you love most about your job at emotive?

I love the opportunity to work across such a diverse range of projects and platforms. We’ve covered so much ground in the last 4 years, including installations for congress, patient support apps, online learning, VR films and of course web apps and sites. I think it’s rare to find an agency with such a diverse array of work.

What three words would you use to describe your job?

Flexibility, agility, crumpets!

Who has been the most influential person in your life to date?

Rick Sanchez. His philosophical and spiritual insights have helped me grow professionally and personally.

What has been the most fun you’ve had during your time at emotive?

The last company away day – every year in the summer the whole team escapes the office for the 48 hours of team building activities, workshops and barbeques.

What is your favourite sandwich?

Veggie New Yorker.
